Why we need computer? Not applications but uses

Why we need computer? [Not applications]

When such question is asked in exams, it is tricky to answer. Because state the applications of computer is different then uses of computer or why we need computer question. So some of the scenarios of such questions is discussed here.

Where computers are used and why?

Computers are used in areas which require huge amount of data to be processed at a short period of time to give desired required output.

Where Computer is used

Computer are used in many fields and they are

1. Scientific Calculations where a human error is prone

2. Large scale Data processing which human being cannot do

3. Getting data from dangerous locations where a human being cannot reach or may lose life.

4. Telecommunication

5. Film production

Why use a computer:-

1. Very fast accurate output within a short period which a human being cannot.

2. Do laborious jobs which a human being cannot.

3. Do impossible jobs such a computerized diagnosis of the human body in the field of Radiology, Pathology and other fields of medical science.

Why need computer?

The computer as we know it today had its beginning with a 19th century English mathematics professor name Charles Babbage. He designed the Analytical Engine and it was this design that the basic framework of the computers of today are based on. In the present 21st century we depend on computers to fulfill our requirements at a very short period of time.

Some of the many purposes where Computers are used are

1. Email service such as Yahoo, Gmail for quick delivery of messages.

2. In hospitals for the purpose of patient care and hospital billing.

3. Telecommunications in the form of mobile phones.

4. Defense in the form of missile guidance system and other defense activities.

Why Computers?

Two major factors that stimulate development in any field are the following:

-        Demand of users and potential users

-        Available technology

Prior to the industrial revolution computers were only used for scientific research. Their potential was first recognized by the US Army during the world war. They were used to keep track of the movement of arms and ammunition. Following the industrial revolution, people felt that computers could also be used for commercial purpose. For example, in the banks to maintain efficient banking system, in industrial and business houses to maintain their inventory for accounts management, sales and budgeting, production and planning.

At the same time dramatic development in the Electrical, Electronic and Communication Engineering together with software expertise has enabled many of these demands to be met. One such engineering technology is the Information Technology, popularly known as IT, which brought computers to our homes and offices. This led to a revolution in the IT industry, keeping in mind the need of the modern era that believed in the speedy storage and retrieval of information, at any point of time. This resulted in an effective and efficient working environment. Thus, the modern age is rightly called the 'Computer Age', making computers indispensable. Current growth in the Information Technology is leading to the concept of Paperless Offices.

Advantages of Computers

-        Perform repetitive tasks

-        More accurate while dealing with large numbers

-        Work at constant efficiency

-        Are used in almost every field

-        Process millions of instructions in a fraction of a second

-        Effective and efficient data storage and retrieval

Uses of computer [approach one]

The purpose of the computer is to transform data into information. In this context, data means some kind of unorganized material that can be entered into the computer - a rough sketch that needs work, a first draft of an essay that needs revision or polishing, figures from a company’s books, a list of names and addresses. What results from processing operations is information, i.e. data that has been made meaningful and useful. This capability to process data can be used in a variety of ways.

People have come up with some very interesting uses.

A psychologist keeps a computer in the counselling room. At the touch of a key, the psychologist can search through references on a computer disk for information relating to topics that come up during counselling sessions.

Why need computer in generally?

Computers are useful: they help us write letters, find information on the Internet, and even create our own music CDs. Some people love computers—they speak a different language that includes nonsensical words like IP address and gigabytes. But most of us are somewhat clueless when it comes to computers. We know how to turn our computer on, how to surf the Internet (maybe), and how to write a quick letter on a word processor.

But that’s about it—we have to ask our kids or friends for help when something goes wrong, which is all the time.

The use of computers is increasing at such a rate that there is hardly any field where computers are not used. The following list describes some of the applications of computers:

1. In offices and homes for preparing documents and to perform other data processing jobs.

2. To prepare salary slips and salary cheques in office and factories.

3. To maintain accounts and transfer funds in banks.

4. To store and retrieve large amount of information in offices.

5. To send and receive electronic mail / fax.

6. To search and retrieve information from other computers.

7. To reserve tickets in the transportation sectors, e.g. Railways, Air Lines, etc.

8. To regulate traffic lights on roads and to control machines and robots in factories.

9. To design automobiles, buildings and dams and to forecast weather.

10. To create animation / cartoon movies and compose music.

11. To control modern automobiles, trains, airplanes etc.

12. To control electronic appliances, such as air-conditioner, TVs, VCRs etc.

13. To On-line banking, buy and sell merchandise, shares, bonds, etc.

14. To control and simulate defense equipments.

15. For scientific and industrial research.

Uses of computer [approach two]

People use computers in many ways; business, computers are used to track inventories with bar codes and scanners, check the credit status of customers, and transfer funds electronically, homes, tiny computers embedded in the electronic circuitry of most appliances control the indoor temperature, operate home security systems, tell the time, and turn video cassette recorders (VCRs) on and off, automobiles regulate the flow of fuel, thereby increasing gas mileage, they also entertain, creating digitized sound on stereo systems or computer-animated features from a digitally encoded laser disc.

Computer programs, or applications, exist to aid every level of education, from programs that teach simple addition or sentence construction to programs that teach advanced calculus. Educators use computers to track grades and communicate with students; with computer-controlled projection units, they can add graphics, sound, and animation to their communications. Computers are used extensively in scientific research to solve mathematical problems, investigate complicated data, or model systems that are too costly or impractical to build, such as testing the air flow around the next generation of aircraft. The military employs computers in sophisticated communications to encode and unscramble messages, and to keep track of personnel and supplies.
