Pushbutton || TinkerCAD Circuits Input Component

 A switch that closes a circuit while pressed. It's used to create a temporary connection when activated.

Description:

This device is a momentary switch.

How It Works:

A pushbutton contains metal contacts that are squished together when the button is pressed, allowing electrical current to flow. This pushbutton has four wire leads, two sets of which are internally connected always, and the two sets touch when the button is pressed.

Connect It:

Wire one side of the switch to power, and the other side to a microcontroller input pin, as well as to ground through a large resistor. The resistor holds the pin LOW unless the button is pressed, at which point the pin can detect a HIGH signal as it connects to 5V.

How It Is Used:

Click the device during simulation to simulate pressing the switch. Press Shift and click the device to simulate holding the switch down.

Pushbutton switches are widely used in electronic devices for user input, typically providing a momentary contact to activate or deactivate a circuit. There are several types of pushbutton switches, including momentary (normally open or normally closed) and latching pushbuttons, with the former returning to its default state after being released and the latter staying in its activated state until manually pressed again. Key specifications for pushbutton switches include their voltage rating, which commonly ranges from 12V to 250V depending on the application, and current rating, typically ranging from 0.1A to 10A. The contact resistance is generally low, often below 100mΩ, ensuring minimal voltage drop across the switch. Mechanical life ratings can vary from 100,000 to several million cycles, depending on the quality of the switch. Operating temperature ranges are often between -25°C and +85°C, while insulation resistance may reach up to 100MΩ at 500V DC to ensure proper insulation between contacts. The units for these parameters are volts (V) for voltage, amperes (A) for current, ohms (Ω) for resistance, and degrees Celsius (°C) for temperature. Pushbutton switches are also available with varying actuator types such as flat, dome, or tactile for different tactile feedback experiences.
